Message menus in Slack are a great way to edit and customize tasks without having to leave the Slack environment.  All of the following are possible either by using the menus after a task is created or by using the menu after using the /todo list command:
  • Completing the task
  • Assigning the task to yourself or others
  • Adding or changing the due date
  • Editing the task and/or adding a description
  • Adding a comment
  • Removing the task
  • Moving the task to a different list in the space

To use the menu after a task is created, click on the ellipses (three dots) directly underneath the task.  

To use the menu after using the /todo list command, select the task that you'd like to edit, the click on the ellipses (three dots) to the right of the task title.

Completing a task using the message menu

To complete a task using the message menu, click on the ellipses (three dots) then select "Complete."  A channel notice will occur to confirm task completion.

Assigning tasks using the message menu

To assign a task to a user, click on the ellipses (three dots,) select "Assign" and then select your assignee.  If the task hasn't been assigned during task creation, you can also use the quick assign button underneath the task.

As stated above, you can use the menu after using the /todo command as well, by clicking on the ellipses and selecting "Assign."

Adding or editing a due date using the message menu

To add a due date , click on the elipses (three dots,) select "Edit," which will bring up your task details. Click on "Pick a date" or the existing due date.  Click on the calendar to set or change the due date then click "Save."  If there is no due date when the task is created,  you can click the due date shortcut to add a due date.

Editing a task and/or adding a description using the message menu

To either edit a task name and/or add a description, click on the ellipses (three dots) and select "Edit" from the drop-down menu.  A pop-up window will appear to enable you to edit the task and add a description.  Remember to click "Save" to save your changes.

Adding a comment using the message menu

To add a comment to a task, click on the ellipses (three dots,) then chose "Add comment" from the menu, and add your comment in the window that appears.  Hit "Save", and a confirmation message will appear that your comment has been saved.

Removing a task using the message menu

To remove the task, click on the ellipses (three dots) and then select "Remove."  The task will be removed.  Click "Dismiss" to delete the task removal message.

Moving the task to a different list in the space or channel

  • Click on the click on the ellipses (three dots,) then select "Edit" to bring up the task details.
  • Click on the arrow next to the current list name to bring up the lists available in the space.
  • Click on the list where you'd like to move the task.
  • Click "Save" to save the change.
